VISITING MARES.

We normally like visiting mares to arrive with us not earlier than May, due to our heavy land likely to turn into a quagmire if we take them any earlier.  We also feel that it is good, if there is a choice, for foals to be born on new grass in the fine Spring weather with less chance of chills and damp related health problems.

Our visiting mares are kept in small, compatible companion groups in separate paddock strips, within sight and earshot of the stallions’ paddocks. Mares with foals at foot are normally kept close to the house, in full view of the yard so that we can keep a close eye on them.

We use live cover. We do not, at present, do AI. Our stallions Sedgehill Gold and Hollywoods Blue King are both experienced at covering in hand and are well behaved and polite with their mares, controlled but in control of the situation. We try to keep covering as natural as possible, in our purpose built area, trying the mares well with the chosen stallion beforehand so that, when the time comes, covering can be achieved quickly and easily, without twitches or controlling equipment, in as safe and stress free conditions as possible.

We like to scan at 14 to 16 days from the last covering, checking for pregnancy and the possible but rare occurrence of twins.  Our vets are very experienced in horse fertility work and are always concerned for the safety and comfort of the mare. All being well, with pregnancy confirmed, the mare is now free to return home, ready for the long wait for her new arrival.

We know how important our visiting mares are to their owners and we like them to relax and enjoy their time with us.  We are happy to discuss their progress any time during their stay and pleased if their owners want to come and see them with a carrot or two.

Please email or ring for stud cards, photographs, or more information about bringing mares to stud, or, better still, come and see us!
