Foals
We breed four or five foals a year at Cotesbach. We normally plan our new arrivals for the natural time of May, June and July, when there is plenty of new grass for mother and baby. Our imminent mares are moved to the foaling paddock in good time for their babies to be born on fresh grass in full view of the house.
When the babies are a few days old and the dam is happy and relaxed they are put together with the other mares and foals so the little tribe can grow up together, playing and growing strong with their brothers and sisters and learning, both from their own dams and from their ‘aunties’, good behaviour and respect. Each foal is regularly handled, starting with gentle fussing and scratching and leading to short ‘training sessions’ in the round pen with attention to picking up feet, giving to pressure etc. The formalities also have to be seen to including injections, registrations and microchipping.
Our policy is not to wean our foals until they are at least six months old, when we find they are grown up enough to be separated without too much anxiety. They are stabled in our ‘weaning stables’ next to each other, with a connecting window between for company. They are normally ready to go to their new homes in two to three weeks, once they have settled down on their own, they will lead out happily and we are confident that they are ready for their new life in the big wide world.
