At stud, we cover mares in hand, taking care to be sensitive to the mare’s needs and keeping things as natural as possible. The stallions are both respectful of the mares who we like to introduce to the chosen stallion tactfully, getting the mare used to the routine before we need to cover her. Because we take things steadily try the mare carefully and make sure we cover at the optimum time, we do not find we need to use restraints such as twitches or hobbles, covering is less stressful, everyone is happy and the normal outcome is a happy mare and a healthy foal the following year.
Visiting mares are kept in paddock strips, generally two or at most, three together with care taken to pair them up with companions with compatible temperaments and ages. We find they settle well like this and seem to enjoy their visit.
We use a very capable specialist equine veterinary practice team who are quickly on hand and are always willing to help with any fertility treatments or problems. They are also very experienced scanners both in detecting fertility problems and pregnancy.
